A Voice Artist By Accident

Do you remember when you were a kid and people asked you what you wanted to be one day? I didn’t even know that my job existed back then, and if I had, it would more than likely not have interested me. It is fascinating how we change and grow as we move through life because today I cannot imagine being anything else besides a Voice Artist.

I fell into it by accident, you see.

It happened while I was volunteering as admistrative support at a local community radio station. One of the marketing staff asked me to be the voice of a promotional jingle for the station – a simple, short read that I agreed to record. It must have worked out quite well because that one read soon became several more, and the rest is history (or current affairs, considering that I’m still doing it on the daily).

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I could be paid to speak! That awareness didn’t happen overnight; it was more of a realisation that dawned on me over a long time – years, in fact. What a privilege to get paid to do what you love doing; Mark Twain had that notion quite right.

If I was going to succeed, become a truly international voice artist, my business would have to become about more than just recording voices professionally. I had to engage with my clients, understand their needs, and convey their goals through my voice.

That determination led to the creation of Hey Abbott’s tagline: “Giving Voice to Your Vision.”

The right voice can make a brand memorable, engaging, attention grabbing. The wrong voice and it risks being forgettable, unnoticed.

I still can’t believe that I get to do this every day. And in living out my own dream, I help to bring other’s dreams into the world and give it voice! Literally.
